MI Governor Gretchen Whitmer Declares State of Emergency for Wayne County

Major Floods Swamp Metro Detroit Area

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer declared a state of emergency for Wayne County in the aftermath of heavy rainfall, causing damage and flooding of the Southfield freeway. In a press release, Whitmer thanked "first responders, volunteers, and residents who pulled together to respond to the devastation caused by the heavy rains and flood waters."

With 3,000 homes damaged and a local recovery team inadequate to address the situation, Wayne County Executive Warren Evans declared a state of emergency. With the Governors declaration, the state is required to protect the health, safety, and property to lesson or avert the threat of a crisis. This now authorizes the Michigan State Police, Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division to coordinate state efforts in conjunction with local agencies.
