Detroit Police Set To Recruit 400 New Officers Starting at $42K

The Detroit Police Departments new recruitment campaign aims for Detroit's 'best and brightest’ to "Join Detroit Blue”.

The new campaign was produced in order to keep pace with the hiring needs of the Department, with a goal of 400.

“Our goal is to continue to recruit the best of the best to join our team,” said Chief JamesE. Craig in a statement. “As Detroit continues to thrive and diversify, our Department will continue to evolve in order to reflect those positive changes.”

Chief Craig added that the primary goal of the campaign is to encourage Detroiters to consider an exciting career with the Detroit Police. “We offer many opportunities for growth and training at Detroit Police. In a suburban department, you might not ever get to work in an investigative unit, or on surveillance, fly a helicopter, work a marine unit, or be a K-9 or SWAT officer.”

Starting pay is $40,732. Apply online today at JoinDetroitBlue.org.

Career opportunities in law enforcement elevated for local 24-year police veteran LaShinda Stair, who started the police academy at age 23. “I just needed a job” said Stair on the Doctors Office podcast.  A proud Cass Technical High School graduate, she has held the rank of Police Officer, Sergeant, Lieutenant, Inspector, and Deputy Chief.

She made history in 2014 when Chief James Craig appointed her First Assistant Chief, the first African American female to ever hold that position. With an earned Master’s Business Certificate from the Mike Ilitch School of Business, LaShinda is set to earn her second Master’s (in Business Administration) from Wayne State University.

In honor of National Women’s Month, 97.9 WJLB would like to recognize 24-year veteran First Assistant Chief Lashinda Stair. Check out the podcast below and see why she choose a career in law enforcement.
