- The Detroit Youth Empowerment Awards were an idea that became a reality this year.
- In a time when uncertainty filled our world, there were these seven (7) teens and young adults powering through life, finding clarity and figuring out different ways to persevere.
- This included one young lady who was able to find a way to secure over a half a million meals for seniors and others in Detroit, young men who have used their life experiences to transform and work with others in their community to mentor and motivate. Their were others who navigated through their darkest season in life with "grit and grace," and still continued to show up and excel.
- And this young man, Stefan Perez. On the fourth night of Protests in Detroit, life changed for this young man. As he has said, "he finally found his voice."
- A voice that would be heard across the country as the Mayor of Detroit sang his praises on national news.
- Stefan Perez, 16, of Southwest Detroit, helped deescalate tensions between protestors and the police when the emergency curfew went into place. As he's said on several occasions, "he wanted to make sure everyone got home safe that night."
- Make no mistake, Perez is very vocal about changes he feels need to be made.
